YORKTOWN, N.Y. Total opening day enrollment across the Yorktown Central School District remains consistent with previous years, but enrollment at the kindergarten and first grade levels are the lowest they have been in a decade, said Assistant Superintendent for Business Tom Cole.
Cole said the actual enrollment of 3,619 is within 10 students of what the district had budgeted for last spring, and he believes the number will remain static for the next three to five years.
Only 909 of the 3,619 are elementary school students, however. Enrollment at kindergarten is 209 and enrollment at first grade is 206. Cole believes the numbers will eventually flatten out.
There is still a decline year over year, but we believe that going forward that the numbers will start to even out for the next several years, Cole said at Tuesday nights school board meeting. We dont expect to see significant declines going forward, but we dont expect any significant growth as well.
Even if there were significant growth at the elementary school level, Cole said the district would still be a long way away from needing to re-open French Hill Elementary School.
We have significant room in our existing schools, Cole said. If we do grow, we have several years of being able to absorb significant growth.
He said about 450 students would have to appear in the district before being concerned about opening up French Hill again.
Weve done maximum capacity studies at each one of our elementary schools, and if we consider every available space and every conceivable configuration, the number would be larger than that, Cole said.
