New York State Education Commissioner John King notified Mildred E. Strang Middle School and Yorktown High School that they were among 359 schools in the state to be named as Reward Schools, or schools that have "made the most progress or have the highest performance with no significant gaps in student achievement," according to a news release from the Yorktown School District.
The recognition comes "based on significant student progress over the past three consecutive years on New York State assessments," according to the release.
“We are very proud to have received this designation and recognition by the Commissioner of Education, that recognizes the work of students, teachers, administrators, support staff and parents in Yorktown. Our efforts in our elementary schools from kindergarten through fifth grade provide the foundation that results in continuous achievement in our secondary schools,” Deputy Superintendent of Schools Florence T. O’Connor, said in the release. “We will keep students at the center of our efforts as we continue to strengthen our learning community.”
