Yorktown Students Place as Finalists for Merit Scholarships

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Four students from Yorktown High School are finalists for the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program, out of 16,000 semifinalists.

Certificates of Merit were given to the four Yorktown seniors — Michael A. Beechert, Samuel A. Donow, Rachel N. Lee and Juliana H. Vigorito — who will be among  competitors for 8,400 merit scholarships. Student Shanelle Glanville has qualified as a finalist for the National Achievement Scholarship.

To become a finalist, semifinalists must have outstanding academic records throughout high school, earn SAT scores that confirm their academic performance and be endorsed by their high school principal.

Part of the process is a detailed scholarship application, including students' self-descripitive essays as well as information about their participation and leadership in school and community activities.
