Yorktown Students To Present In Science Competitions

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. --  Five students involved in the science research program at Yorktown High School have won all-expense paid trips to present their research at two international science competitions.

Three students, Catherine Chung, Sara Mongno and Jason Toporoff, will present their research at the International Sustainable World (energy, engineering, environment) Project Olympiad, I-SWEEEP, in Houston between Wednesday, April 30 and Sunday, May 4.

ISWEEEP brings together science fair winners from all around the world  whose projects focus on sustainability. 

Chung will present "Not a Drop to Drink:  The Challenge of Building a Low-Cost Solar Still to Supply Potable Water in Developing Countries." Sophomore Mongno will present "The Effects of Leaf Litter from Invasive Species on Water Quality Factors."   Toporoff will present "Solar Disinfection: The Risk of Recontamination After Exposure to Ultraviolet Light."

Erik Santini and Matt Wrubel will present their research," Compressed Air Energy Storage," at the Intel Science and Engineering Fair with over 1,500 other high school science fair winners in Los Angeles between Sunday, May 11, and Friday, May 16.

The public is welcome to attend and learn more about all of the projects that the more than 70 students involved in the science research program have been working on at the annual Symposium on Thursday, May 29, at 7 p.m. in the YHS auditorium. The event is free, and refreshments will be served.
