Yorktown Voters Approve $92M Schools Budget

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – Residents in the Yorktown School District on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a $92.2 million budget for the 2012-13 school year.

Voters who dodged the frequent rain showers outside Mohansic Elementary School gave a thumbs-up to the budget, which includes a district-wide property tax hike of 2.3 percent, by a margin of 1,120 to 502, according to unofficial results.

Spending will increase by slightly more than $1 million from this year, but the district still came in $908,000 below the allowable state tax levy cap. District officials utilized $1.29 million from reserve funds to balance the budget. One of the challenges that school officials grappled with was $18 million in unfunded federal and state mandates.

In the uncontested board of education race, President Jackie Carbone was re-elected to a third three-year term, and Trustee Christie Montero was elected to her first full three-year term. Montero was appointed on Sept. 19, 2011 to fill the unexpired term of Mark Drexel, who resigned after years of service due to work commitments.

The Yorktown School District serves approximately 3,600 students in six schools.
