YORKTOWN, N.Y. The Yorktown Central School Districts Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday morning to contribute to $16.9 million in capital projects at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES' facilities, said Karli Wheeler, the districts media manager.
BOCES's renovation plan, requiring unanimous approval by the 18 districts that use the facilities, was initially presented to the Board of Education in 2011. After the project was voted down by six of the districts, BOCES scaled the project back by $2.1 million and asked the districts to vote again.
Most of the 18 districts voted Tuesday. Despite Yorktowns vote, BOCES failed to receive unanimous support early in the day when the Chappaqua Central School District voted the projects down.
John McCarthy, BOCES assistant superintendent for administration, has said if there was no unanimous agreement, it will move forward with the projects anyway and find another way to get the funds from the districts.
The project would build a therapy pool, replace HVAC units, and replace and repair roofs. The proposal calls for Yorktown to contribute $986,000 to the repairs over a three-year period. The money would have to be budgeted for by Yorktown and the other 17 districts.
