RYE, N.Y. -- Rye went into the first intermission having dominated the opening period against Yorktown Wednesday.
The Garnets outshot the Cornhuskers, 15-5, and were flying all over the ice, creating havoc and applying heavy pressure throughout. However, Rye skated off the ice facing a two-goal deficit and shaking its collective head as Yorktown goalie Randy Ashe made several outstanding saves.
We knew if we kept shooting, putting the puck on net, the shots would definitely start going in, Michael Benincasa said.
Fourth-seeded Rye came out with added incentive to start the second period and blitzed fifth-seeded Yorktown with four goals in an eventual 5-3 win in a Section 1 Division II ice Hockey Championship quarterfinal game at Playland Ice Casino.
The Garnets (14-5-2) advance to the semis and will host No. 8 Scarsdale Friday, at Playland. Scarsdale is in the semis after upsetting top-seeded Brewster. The other semi will have No. 2 Pelham playing No. 3 John Jay-Cross River, Friday, 6 p.m., at the Ice Hutch.
Rye and Scarsdale met in December with the Garnets posting a 5-1 win.
Yorktown (14-6-1) led 2-0 after the first period as Tyler Proscia scored, including his second with four seconds remaining in the first period.
We had some unlucky bounces go against us, but we knew if we came and out played like we did in the first period we would be okay.
Cal Hynson initiated the four-goal second period at the 53-second mark, assisted by Benincasa. Defenseman Luke Uzcategui let go with a wrist shot from the point that eluded a heavily-screened Ashe at the 1:36 mark. Danny Sullivan made the score 3-1 at 4:45, with a power-play goal and Jack OBrien punctuated it 41 seconds later.Everything started going our way and once we took control of the momentum, we never looked back, Benincasa said.
We were hustling all over the ice and getting all of the loose pucks. We were moving the puck really well and controlling it in our offensive zone.
Hynson finished with a goal and two assists, Benincasa had three assists and OBrien scored Ryes last two goals. Proscia had a hat trick for Yorktown and Ashe finished with 50 saves.
