SHRUB OAK, N.Y. -- Kristen Conroy was named a captain for the 2012 Lakeland varsity field hockey team and with good reason.
The senior was promoted to the varsity in her freshman year and, in 2011, Conroy emerged as an impact player as the Hornets won their third consecutive New York State Class B title. The graduation of a talented senior class, including Emma Bozek and Shannon Scavelli, meant this current senior group would have to step up and continue Lakelands tradition. Conroy has helped lead Lakeland to a 6-0 start as the Hornets aim for a fourth consecutive sectional and state championship.
Conroy has three goals and two assists, but these numbers dont demonstrate her impact. Conroy is an excellent two-way player and force on the teams offensive penalty corner group.
Kristen has been a really strong player for us this season, Lakeland field hockey coach Sharon Sarsen said. Kristen controls the midfield and is also a great offensive threat on penalty corners.
Conroys presence makes it difficult on opponents to advance beyond midfield or into Lakeland's circle.
Kristens skills, tactics and game decisions lead our team this season, Sarsen said. The biggest difference is that Kristen is a leader on the field for us and she has become much more consistent defensively.
Kristen worked tireless during the off season, attending numerous tournaments and leagues to prepare herself for her final season.
