Juniors Excel for Yorktown in Wrestling Tournament

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. -- John Tornambe sat down to relax, following a long two days hosting the ninth annual Yorktown Holiday Wrestling Classic, content with his team’s performance.

Yorktown went 5-0 to win its’ pool and advance to the title match against Somers. The Cornhuskers had the lead late, only to have Somers finish with two pins in the last three matches to score a 37-34 win, Saturday. Despite the final outcome in the final, Tornambe and his team had plenty to be pleased with.

His junior class, which started with Tornambe as seventh-graders on modified and were promoted to varsity as eighth-graders, when he was named coach, had another solid showing.

Joe Mastro (152 pounds), Jimmy Kaishian (126), Steven Sabella (170), Thomas Murray (195) and David Varian (285) all went 6-0. Kyle Santucci (132) finished 5-1.

“We had a great two days,” Tornambe said. “That last match, Somers was the better team, but we will keep working hard in the room and we will see them again. I liked our intensity. The guys were wrestling hard for six minutes, going at their opponent, being aggressive and setting up their shots.”

Mastro and Kaishian pinned their Somers’ opponents, Murray scored a major decision, Sabella wrestled tough in a decision and Varian prevailed in a ride-out, reversing Dom DeVita with five seconds on the clock. “They all wrestled well,” Tornambe said. “Murray controlled his match and kept his cool. He is a tough, physical kid who brings it.”

Yorktown advanced to the final with wins over Sleepy Hollow (51-23), Dobbs Ferry (66-18), Putnam Valley (63-21), Westlake (70-9) and Croton (58-15).
