SHRUB OAK, N.Y. – Rebecca Bard, Gianna Bensaia and Kirsten Conroy began their Lakeland field hockey careers together as freshmen and have been linked ever since.
The senior trio kept this bond together one more time Wednesday morning when they signed with their respective colleges in the library at Lakeland High School.
Bard will attend Columbia, Bensaia is off to the University of New Hampshire and Conroy will go to Sacred Heart.
“The ceremony was definitely one of the most memorable events and I will always cherish it,” Bensaia said. “It was an amazing feeling to be surrounded by our families and friends. The three of us have a lot of support behind us and we are lucky that we are able to continue our field hockey career at such a high level.”
The seniors were captains last fall and led Lakeland to an unprecedented fourth consecutive state Class B field hockey championship. Bard, Bensaia and Conroy are the only players in Lakeland field hockey’s storied tradition to win four state titles.
Bensaia will join former Lakeland standout and teammate Megan Bozek at New Hampshire. Conroy follows in the footsteps of former Lakeland standouts Colleen Carney and Andi Coiro, who starred at Sacred Heart. Coiro was a captain on Lakeland’s 2003 Class A state-title team.
Bensaia said the three friends were glad they all signed together.
“Doing the signing with Rebecca and Kristen was special because we developed such a great bond freshman year and it has only grown stronger as we've gotten older,” Bensaia said.
