CORTLANDT MANOR, N.Y. Emma Bozek wasted little time doing what she does best playing field hockey score.
The 2012 Lakeland High School graduate scored her first college goal in her University of North Carolina debut as the Tar Heels defeated the University of Michigan, 5-1, in the season-opener for both teams.
Bozek, of Cortlandt Manor, scored 34 minutes into the game, redirecting a pass from Kelsey Kolojejchick, giving North Carolina a 2-0 lead.
It was a great feeling and I was really excited, said Bozek, who helped lead Lakeland to three consecutive New York State Class B championships. When I scored it got my nerves out and it made me realize that I can do this and move forward from here.
The ball came from the midfield with KK (Kelsey Kolojejchick) sending a reverse-sweep pass into the circle and I deflected it in. It was also because it was a combined effort.
Bozeks goal came against former Lakeland teammate and good friend Shannon Scavelli, who starts at forward for Michigan.
Starting our college careers playing against each other was fun and it was good to see each other, but it did feel weird, said Bozek, who was boarding a bus for Syracuse and a game with the Orange.
