Lakeland High Football Team Hungry To Move Up Ladder, Crack Playoff Bubble

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. -- The Lakeland High football team finished out of the playoffs the last two seasons, and the Hornets have some good teams to get past in Class A if they want to make the leap this fall.

Head coach Rob Cappelli talked to Daily Voice about this year's team at a practice last week.

"We've been kind of frustrated the past two years, back-to-back, 5-4 seasons where we just missed the playoffs," Cappelli said. "Our team has a great work ethic. They listen, and come every single day with a great work ethic. We know we need to work, we graduated a lot of people. This team is going to go out and compete every week."

Hornets 2015 team captains are senior G/T Anthony Nusbaum, senior RB/SS Keir Maley, senior TE/DE Nicholas Vazquez and senior WR/S Kevin Prunty.

"Maley is an outstanding running back," the coach said. "Anthony Nusbaum is a big guy on our line, Nicky Vazquez has done a great job for us in two years on varsity. Overall, we have a lot of young guys, but with a great work ethic."

Senior Trevor McCarthy will take over the reigns at quarterback, and Cappelli believes McCarthy will be solid. "This will be his first year running the offense, he's very intelligent, and has a very strong arm, so we're excited."

Lakeland opens the 2015 season at Fox Lane on Friday, Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
