Lakeland Plays Well in Volleyball Opener

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. -- Regan Knox collected 10 kills and 13 digs and Libby Seidell added eight kills and five digs as visiting John Jay-Cross River defeated Lakeland, 22-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-23, Tuesday.

It was Lakeland’s season opener. The Hornets participated in the Yorktown Tournament last weekend.

“I am very pleased with the way the girls played,” said Lakeland coach Steve Fallo. “We learned what we needed to work on from the Yorktown tournament and came back and had a great practice yesterday.”

Sihana Brucaj finished with 15 kills, nine blocks and two aces and Erin Geoghegan had eight kills, 16 assists and three aces.

“Our serve-receive was much better and our defense improved 100 percent,” Fallo said. “I think we hurt ourselves in those areas Saturday. The effort and enthusiasm was there Saturday, as well as today, and we saw a big jump from Saturday to today. We didn’t pass the ball to well Saturday and we didn’t get the ball to our setters so we also worked on that. Our passing made our offense click.”
