Lakeland Volleyball Comes Together For Season

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. — One of the Lakeland High School varsity volleyball team’s goals coming into preseason was to be more "together."

“We all met up after last year and explained what we wanted to do this year,” said senior Alana Kravitz, in her fourth year on varsity. “When we came in, we wanted to do things together and be more cohesive.”

Through the first two weeks of practice, Lakeland has accomplished this goal. The Hornets have bonded and are primed to make up for a sub-.500 2011 season.

“We came together in late July because we felt the earlier we start, the better we would be, and it would be more beneficial going into the season,” said Kravtiz during a break in practice Saturday.

Kravitz and Dinalisse Felicione are the only seniors for Lakeland. They are joined by 11 juniors, including four returnees — Amanda Noble, Alexandra Pappalardo, Jess Vangor and Colleen Geoghegan.

Kravitz said the team showed it was serious about its’ approach on the first day of practice, and it has intensified with each practice.

“Everybody came in so excited and ready to play,” Kravitz said. “We were moving fast and efficiently on the floor. We were all hitting the floor because we didn’t want the ball to touch the floor.”

Veteran Lakeland coach Steve Fallo has made a few adjustments based on last year. Kravitz said the team has embraced the modifications to the offense and defense and is comfortable with it.

“We want to make good because we are upset about last year,” Kravitz said. “We have so much potential with the new girls we have on varsity.

“We are more determined because we feel we have a chance at a great season. We feel we have a lot of talent and we want to be a complete team.”

Lakeland opens the 2012 season Friday, Sept. 7, at Peekskill. The Hornets open their home schedule Thursday, Sept. 15, with Mahopac.
