WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- It is the moment every student-athlete looks forward to -- the opening of the high school sports season.
The 2011 scholastic season starts Tuesday, with field hockey and soccer games and volleyball matches. It revs up to full force Wednesday with a slate of games in all fall sports.
Lakeland, the two-time defending New York State Class B field hockey champion, opens its quest for a third consecutive Section 1 title Tuesday, hosting Ossining at 7 p.m. The Hornets have three of Section 1s elite players in Shannon Scavelli, Emma Bozek and Gianna Bensaia.
Scavelli has verbally committed to Michigan to play field hockey and Bozek has given her word to attend the University of North Carolina, also for field hockey.
Rye will be at Putnam Valley for a scrimmage. These teams have a rivalry, having played for the Section 1 Class B field hockey title numerous times.
Sleepy Hollow, New Rochelle, Dobbs Ferry and Ardsley will host volleyball matches. Ardsley, a 2010 Section 1 Class A semifinalist, will play Scarsdale. The Yorktown girls soccer team will host a tournament, beginning at 4 p.m.
On Tuesday, Lakeland will host Ossining in field hockey at 7 p.m. and Putnam Valley will host Rye in a scrimmage at 4:30 p.m. Also Tuesday, there will be a girls' soccer tournament in Yorktown at 4:15 p.m.
Mount Vernon will be at Sleepy Hollow, Mamaroneck will play at Gorton, Irvington will be at New Rochelle, Saunders will be at Dobbs Ferry and Scarsdale will play at Ardsley in a series of volleyball matches. All matches are at 4:15 p.m.
