YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Yorktown senior Steven Sabella came into the wrestling season with a luxury.
Sabella did not have to worry about monitoring his weight as he was moving up two weight classes, from 170 to 195 pounds. This allowed Sabella to eat healthy on his way up.
The senior has made an effortless transition. He is undefeated, winning the Bethpage and Mid-Hudson wrestling tournaments and is The Yorktown Daily Voice December Athlete of the Month .
“I put my weight on over the offseason, but even with the big jump, I feel faster, stronger and more explosive,” said Sabella, the 2012 Section 1, Division I 170-pound champion.
Sabella worked with a personal trainer during the offseason to prepare himself for wrestling season. He said they focused on everything.
“He had my working heavy weights, to speed work to agility drills,” Sabella said. “At 195, I wanted to be more athletic than I have been before.”
Sabella has used his quickness and technique to offset any weight disadvantage he may have. Sabella said one major improvement he has made is on offense.
“Last year I was more defensive and I was winning matches, for example, 5-2 or 6-3,” Sabella said. “I’ve opened up much more. I’m working every position and have become more well-rounded. I want to get everything I can out of off those six minutes.”
Sabella credits teammates Thomas Murray, Joe Mastro and David Varian with helping him during practice. Murray, Yorktown’s starting 182-pounder, and Sabella have been drill partners dating back to fourth grade in the Yorktown kids’ wrestling club.
