The Pirates (14-3) have clinched first place in the National Division of Westchester-Putnam MSBL, securing top-seed and home-field settings for the upcoming league playoffs.

Over their last three games, Pirate pitching has blanked the opposition for 18 consecutive innings, yielding just a single run over the last 25. On Sunday, Aug. 17, lefthander Matt Miller overpowered the Tarrytown Indians with a 15-strikeout, three-hit shutout masterpiece.

In their previous outing, Tracey and Kraft held the Westchester Mets to a single run in nine innings. The Pirates opened a 5-0, first-inning lead over the Power as Ed Smilkstein, Tony Sottile and Bill Rossiter delivered back-to-back RBI singles. Anthony Ascanio (sac fly) and Greg Locke drove in the other runs.

Dale Hughes and Kraft led off the second with singles and scored via hits by Miller and Ascanio. In the fourth, Rossiter drew a base on balls and Tracey doubled ahead of RBI hits by Kraft and Ascanio. Bill Demersky singled and Smilkstein lined his second RBI base hit, inflating the lead to 12-0.

Tracey (6-1) and Kraft (4-0) combined to strike out four and walked only one batter. Bill Rifkin, Willie Wang and Chris Myers shared the pitching duties for the Power.
