SHRUB OAK, N.Y. -- Cameron Thompson, a student at Lakeland High School in Shrub Oak, won the New York State Championship in the Weight Throw on Saturday.

He becomes the first indoor state champion in boys indoor track from the district.

He qualified for the state championship by winning the Section One Weight Throw.

Thompson's best throw at the county meet was 68 feet, 3 inches, which is only 5 1/2 inches behind the S=state leader. That throw currently ranks him 12th in the nation.

Cameron now holds the Section 1 record in that event.
