After winning her qualifying heat with a time of 22.45 seconds, Stevens will represent her country and hometown in the 200-meter semifinal sprint in Brazil Tuesday night.

In advance of her historic run, Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas announced that there would be a watch party to cheer on Stevens beginning at 9 p.m. at the Doles Community Center.

Deejah’s qualifying race can be seen on the NBC Sports website.

Entering her senior year at the University of Oregon, Stevens surprised many in her first attempt at qualifying for the Olympics when she finished with a time of 22.30, good enough to earn her a trip to Rio.

Prior to her Olympic experience, the Mount Vernon community came together for a fundraising campaign to send Stevens’ family to Brazil to cheer her live on the world’s biggest stage.

“(Deajah) is adding to Mount Vernon’s legacy of leadership in athletics and inspiring millions of young people to pursue their dream,” Thomas said. “Mount Vernonites consider ourselves to be a family, which is why we banded together to make sure Deejah's mother and sister are able to join her in Rio and cheer her on to victory.”
