In game one, the Mets defeated the Pirates by a 7-5 score. Mets' veteran starter and Yorktown resident Doug FitzMorris pitched with a mix of a good curve ball and sharp fastball. In the playoff round against the Westchester Giants one week earlier, FitzMorris pitched a complete game three-hitter to gain the win in what was his 300th pitching appearance in his 22-year MSBL career.
Scoring for the Mets was led by Frank Panebianco, who delivered two hits and was hit by a pitch. The Mets' runs were scored by Flynn Gilden, Mark Smith, Tim Seckerson, Bobby Martarano, Danny Harrigan and two by Eddie Volpe. Second baseman Mike McCarthy added an RBI single and DH Ken Fox delivered a clutch RBI single in the sixth inning, which put the Mets ahead for good.
In game two, the Mets won 5-4, with the help of pitcher Martarano.
Sunday's championship win was particularly special to Mets Manager Bruce Bendish, who already had been inducted into the MSBL Hall of Fame despite lacking a league championship.
Bendish hopes to continue the Mets' winning ways with a national World Series title at the MSLB World Series in Arizona in late October.
