Yorktown Boys Lacrosse Falls in State Semifinals

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Yorktown High’s boys lacrosse team faced what many consider to be the best high school lacrosse team in the country in the Class B state semifinals Wednesday.

And Garden City showed why it has that reputation, pouring in goal after goal as it thrashed Yorktown, 14-4, to advance to the Class B state championship game. The Trojans flipped the ball around like it was on a string, and their defense moved like pieces on a chess board, rotating into position to stop any potential attack.

“They’re the No. 1 team in the country for a reason,” said Yorktown coach Dave Marr. “You’re not playing against the Little Sisters of the Poor here.”

Yorktown scored the first goal and took a 1-0 lead, but it was all Garden City from there. The Trojans bombarded the net and took with a series of quick goals.

In the second quarter with a 6-3 lead, Garden City’s Devin Dwyer fed Justin Guterding twice in 6 seconds and Guterding scored both times. Dwyer finished with seven assists. The Trojans had an 8-0 run that stretched through the final three quarters.

The one-two punch, and the run that followed was too much to overcome, Marr said.

“It was definitely not a good feeling going in that locker room down seven goals," he said. "Playing that caliber of a team, it’s tough to get them going and get them back up into it. Third quarter, they just dominated, as well, so they kind of didn’t give us any chance to get back in the game.”

Marr said his players should be proud of what they accomplished this season — winning the section and regional championships. He tried to give his players some perspective after the game.

“It’s a lacrosse game. It’s not the end of the world,” Marr said. “I know they’re upset. They’re emotional, but they have to sit back and say tomorrow you wake up, sun rises the same as if we won, really. You try hard. You work hard. Not everything is going to work out in life, and you’ve got to come to terms with that and move on.”
