YORKTOWN, N.Y. The Yorktown wrestling team went to the Bethpage Wrestling Tournament Saturday hoping to make a name for itself.
The Cornhuskers accomplished this goal, boasting three champions Joe Mastro (152 pounds), Thomas Murray (182) and David Varian (285) and finishing with seven place-finishers.
This was Yorktowns finest finish in the three years Yorktown coach John Tornambe has taken his team.
Kyle Santucci, Steven Sabella and Jesse Jewell all finished third and Avi Mohan placed fourth.
In my freshman year, we kind of got our heads handed to us and last year we stepped it up as a team and placed a few, Mastro said. We were looking forward to going out again because of how much we improved since last year. That gave us confidence going in.
He continued, Overall, everyone wrestled really tough. Our hard-nosed wrestling got us into our places and our conditioning broke a lot of our opponents.
Mastro credited Murray, who he said was seeded too low. Mastro said Murray beat the top seed in the quarterfinal round.
Varian pinned his semi-final opponent in 20 seconds then won the title with a takedown in overtime.
Mastro registered two pins before falling behind, 2-0, in the first period of the final. He escaped and added another in the second period, evening the score at 2-2 before pinning his opponent.
