YORKTOWN, N.Y. Yorktown High football will try to continue its climb up the standings when it travels to Nyack Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Both teams are 3-2 and tied in the standings with Byram Hills and Spring Valley in Class A League 2. Both need to win Fridays match-up to keep their playoff hopes alive.
In addition, Yorktown and Nyack both need help from the teams above them in the standings. Somers and Brewster are undefeated, and Port Chester, Poughkeepsie and Saunders are tied at 4-1.
So Fridays game is crucial for Yorktown as another loss will likely drop the Huskers out of the playoff picture. Fortunately, the season is trending in Yorktowns favor.
After a shaky 1-2 start in which the lone win was a 35-34 overtime thriller against Ossining, the Huskers have gotten back on track with two straight wins. Yorktown soundly beat Eastchester, 42-26, in week four and stopped Lakeland on a two-point conversion in the final minute of last weeks 29-28 win.
Senior quarterback Nick Mariano has been solid for Yorktown this year and played perhaps his best game last week. Mariano completed 9-for-10 for 215 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 116 yards and a touchdown.
Yorktown also put forth two of its best defensive efforts in back-to-back weeks, though the team has allowed an astonishing 32.8 points per game. The Huskers offense has averaged 28 points per game this season.
Nyack is also coming off two straight wins, a 46-6 rout of Gorton in week four and a 21-6 victory at Spring Valley last week. The Indians have averaged 26.4 points per game this season.
Fridays game will likely be a high-scoring affair and, as it has done all season, Yorktown will need to use its high-powered offense to win a shootout.
