Yorktown Football Faces Strong Poughkeepsie Team

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The Yorktown High School football team faces a tough test in week three when it travels to Poughkeepsie on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Yorktown (1-1) is coming off a tightly contested 35-34 overtime win at Ossining in which the Huskers nearly blew a 22-point halftime lead. Yorktown blocked Ossining’s extra point after the Pride scored on the first possession of overtime and the Huskers then scored and kicked the extra point to win the game.

Yorktown lost its season opener to Somers, 28-6, and the schedule does not get any easier with Poughkeepsie. The Pioneers are 2-0 this season and have given up just one touchdown so far this season. Poughkeepsie blanked Pelham, 33-0, in week one and beat Eastchester, 46-7, in week two.

Poughkeepsie also boasts a powerful offense that has averaged 355.5 passing yards per game, 165.5 rushing yards per game and 39.5 points per game.

But Yorktown enters the matchup with plenty of weapons of its own. Senior quarterback Nick Mariano was instrumental in the Huskers’ win against Yorktown as he threw for 87 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for the tying touchdown in overtime.

The Huskers have also rushed for nearly 200 yards per game this season and accumulated 284 yards on the ground against Ossining.  Both offenses have the potential to put up big numbers on Friday.

Yorktown must shore up its defense and slow down Poughkeepsie to earn the win. If the game turns into a shootout, the Pioneers will likely wind up on top.
