Yorktown Football Faces Tough Ossining Team Friday

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The Yorktown High School football team faces another tough early season test with a game at 7 p.m. Friday at Ossining.

The Huskers lost, 28-6, to rival Somers in their season opener thanks in large part to a 48-yard interception return by the Tuskers’ Joe Lombardo at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Yorktown was moving down the field at that point and trailed just 14-6, but Lombardo’s interception made it 21-6 in Somers’ favor.

Yorktown fell victim to the crucial interception against Somers but the Huskers’ defense showed it is capable of making big plays of its own when the going gets tough.

Somers was mere yards from the end zone twice in the first half Friday but Yorktown snagged two acrobatic, one-handed interceptions to stop the Tuskers’ drives.

On Friday, the Tuskers will have their hands full with running back Stephen Candelaria, who missed most of last season with a hand injury. The senior came back strong in Ossining’s season opener against Nyack with 246 rushing yards and a touchdown.

But Ossining lost, 28-14, to Nyack and will undoubtedly be fired up and looking to avoid an 0-2 start. The Pride led by a touchdown at halftime but, like Yorktown, gave up 21 unanswered points in the second half.

Each team’s defense must avoid similar second-half collapses Friday.

On offense, Candelaria must set the tone for Ossining and wear down the Yorktown defense so quarterback Justin Davidov can do his work. Candelaria also fumbled in the second half against Nyack, something the Pride must avoid against Yorktown.
