WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Two old rivals mixed it up on the steamy turf Thursday afternoon at White Plains High School, as the John Jay High lacrosse team took on perennial champion Yorktown in the Section 1 Class B boys championship game.
in what was a relatively close game all the way - and with the thermometer at 91 - it was Yorktown that held on for an 8-5 victory, claiming the 39th sectional title in program history, and the team's sixth-straight Class B crown
Dom Cioffi was named Offensive MVP for the Cornhuskers after scoring a hat trick. Goaltender Liam Donnelly took home Defensive MVP honors.
Goals from Jay's Josh Rubin and Jack Gorman gave the second-seeded Indians a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. But a four-goal outburst from Yorktown gave the defending champs a 6-4 edge at the break, and Jay's offense stalled in the second half, producing just one score.
Yorktown gets to play a game at home next Wednesday in the regionals, taking on the Section 2 champion at 3 p.m. Yorktown lost in the state semifinals last year.
