Yorktown Visits White Plains in Playoff Push

YORKTOWN, N.Y – The Yorktown High football team defeated White Plains 28-21 last October 22 to bounce the Tigers from the 2010 Class AA playoffs, a fact that gives Friday night’s 7 p.m. meeting between the two teams added meaning as the road to the 2011 playoffs narrows.

The Tigers (2-2) opened the season with two tough losses but recovered with two straight victories to keep their playoff hopes alive. Yorktown (3-2) lost two of its first three games and has also won two straight to put itself on playoff course again.

White Plains is led on offense by quarterback Jeff Avery and running back Darrell Everett, a breakaway threat who missed two games with a concussion but returned to the lineup last week in a 20-17 victory over Suffern.  Everett is also a weapon on special teams where he has had several long kickoff and punt returns. The Tigers have been inconsistent on offense due to several injuries, averaging 21 points a game, while the defense has been strong, allowing 17.

The Huskers have size on both sides of the line and like to run the ball if they can with quarterback Nick Mariani throwing for 453 yards and rushing for 376 to lead the way. Running back Mike Meyreles leads all rushers with 428 yards and four touchdowns. The Yorktown offense averaged just over 15 points a game over the first three games but has scored 38 and 42 points in the last two wins over Lincoln and Carmel.

Defense will determine the winner here. The Tigers must move the ball and finish drives. Yorktown is very consistent on offense and has the size to keep the Tigers ground game from dominating.
