Yorktown Volleyball Working To Refine Focus

YORKTOWN, N.Y. – The Yorktown girls’ volleyball squad had just earned a hard-fought, three-set victory over Ossining and coach Katy Sherwood could finally relax and take stock of where her team stood and where it’s going.

“I get a little nervous in the close ones,” said Sherwood, who sat through two extra-point games in the 25-8, 29-27, 29-27 tussles with the Pride. “They can sometimes lose focus and concern themselves with issues that don’t pertain to volleyball.”

Getting the Huskers to focus through each match has been a work on progress after a tough 3-6 start. After four straight losses, Yorktown hasn’t lost a set in its last two match victories over Lakeland and Ossining and is now 5-6.

“We need to work on serve receive a little and putting the ball away,” Huskers co-captain Erin Sweeney said. “We really need to work on communication. We all have to talk to each other on the court.”

Sherwood knows her girls have the ability to be a strong team as the season moves toward the layoffs.

“We have experienced players with a lot of talent as well as a lot of depth and talent on the bench,” Sherwood said. “Everyone on the team has played many minutes on the court. We have to continue working hard in practice. We are beginning to refocus on our goals for the season and sectionals. “

Sweeney, who joins co-captain Mallory Elaisson as team leaders, hopes the team uses its strengths to build on the mini win streak.

“One of our strengths would have to be serving,” Sweeney said. “That is one thing that we have been working on since preseason because we knew that we would be playing a lot of tough teams and now we can really place the ball wherever we want.”

Elaisson says the Huskers can become more consistent in how they approach each match.

"We can improve as a team by keeping our energy up and playing at our level no matter who our opposition is," Elaisson said. "We can also improve by never giving up. It's still early in the season and there is still plenty of time to leave our mark.

The Huskers will host Hendrick Hudson Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. then travel to Rockland to play Our Lady of Lourdes Friday at 5:45 p.m.

The Huskers volleyball team includes; seniors Megan Figueroa, Heater Raniolo, Fiona O’Connor, Andelea McPartlin, Sam Strebel, Elizabeth Graham and Mariah Raniolo and sophomores Jessica Figueroa, Anna Popollo, Danielle DeIuillo, Michelle Ruffino and Kristen Sweeney.
