SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Steven Sabella walked off the mat Saturday at the Section 1 Large-School Wrestling divisional certain of one thing – he will wrestle Scott Wymbs once again this season.
The Yorktown senior finished a takedown with two seconds remaining in overtime for a 3-1 victory over the Horace Greeley senior in the 195-pound final at Sleepy Hollow.
Sabella was one of five Yorktown wrestlers to win their weight class – Joe Mastro (152 pounds), Thomas Murray (182), David Varian (285) and freshman Kyle Montesano (106). The top four finishers in each weight class qualified for the Section 1 Large School Wrestling Championships Feb. 9-10.
Sabella and Wymbs are considered by the Section 1 wrestling coaches to be the top two 195-pounders in the Section 1 Large-School division. They entered the final with 32 wins apiece.
“There was no doubt in my head when I knew that we were at the same divisional,” said Sabella of wrestling Wymbs. “I had never stepped on a mat with Scott so I didn’t know what to expect.”
The wrestlers were scoreless after one period and traded escapes, with Wymbs scoring in the second period and Sabella in the third. Both wrestlers were looking for the one shot that would result in a takedown, but it was not there in regulation. In overtime, both wrestlers were being cautious when Sabella struck, securing a takedown with two seconds remaining.
“In overtime, that was my wake-up call after almost getting thrown to my back in the first period,” Sabella said. “I had to push the pace a little more in overtime and look for the little openings.”
Sabella earned his second consecutive divisional title. He said he is happy that he wrestled Wymbs on Saturday as opposed to facing him in either a sectional semifinal or final.
“The match was slow, safe and conservative, but I did take a lot out of it,” Sabella said. “I need to work on a lot this week in practice. I really need to open up my offense and score.”
