TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Tarrytown, which takes its place in local folklore very seriously, will host a Halloween parade on Oct. 29 led by none other than the “Headless Horseman” himself.

Tarrytown's annual Halloween parade and block party, set for Saturday, Oct. 29, is expected to draw about 10,000 spectators.

The pumpkin-chucking phantasm was brought to life by Washington Irving in “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” a tale set in the late 1700s in a spooky and secluded glen near the Dutch settlement.

For the past 15 years, Tarrytown’s folks have donned their most terrifying garb and paraded through its streets.

What started with two floats and one marching band has morphed into an event expected to draw at least 10,000 spectators and feature more than 20 floats.

Those wishing to register as an individual, group or float, should visit the Tarrytown Halloween Parade Committee’s website at www.tarrytownhalloweenparade.com by Thursday, Oct. 27.

Marchers will assemble at 4:30 p.m. at Patriot’s Park on Broadway (Route 9). The parade goes south from the park and then turns right onto Main Street.

Joe Arduino, the Recreation Deptartment administrator will be the Master of Ceremonies and there will be five marching bands, including the Marching Cobras, who have performed at the Super Bowl and the White House.

After the parade, Main Street will be closed to accommodate the town’s traditional block party. Performers will include stilt walkers, a juggler and a magician.

Restaurants on Main Street will be setting up tables on the street so diners can enjoy a front-row view of the festivities.

Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Most Creative, Best Costume, Best Float, Best Group, and Best in Show. The name of the person or group who is chosen Best in Show will be added to the Golden Jack-O-Lantern trophy, which is prominently displayed at the Warner Library.

The parade and party are being sponsored by the Greater Sleepy Hollow Tarrytown Chamber of Commerce and the Village of Tarrytown Recreation Department.
