YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- After more than 20 years away, cows are returning to Yorktown's Hilltop Hanover Farm.

Hilltop Hanover will be hosting a welcome home party for its four new cows on Saturday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Milking demonstrations will occur at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and the name of the newborn cow will be announced at noon.

"This is a big deal," Thomas McLoughlin, who is on the board of Friends of Hilltop Hanover said. "The farm has a rich history of cows and everyone was looking for them."

Hilltop Hanover was famous for its prize winning cows which were sold all over the country but it soon got too expensive to maintain.

"We have chickens, goats and lambs, but everyone keeps looking for cows," McLoughlin said.

The two Dutch belted cows the farm bought were pregnant so the farm now has four cows.

"We will use them for educational purposes," McLoughlin said. "We just did a cheese making demonstration a few weeks ago."

McLoughlin said the cows are part of a new beginning for the farm.

"This will draw more attention the diverse programs we offer at Hilltop Hanover," McLoughlin said. "Our intention is to beef up our educational programs. They are pretty cool looking cows."

Having cows back at Hilltop Hanover will hopefully boost interest in the farm.

"We're always looking for ways to raise money and get more grants," McLoughlin said. "We're struggling a little bi we're but doing okay. I've really enjoyed myself at Hilltop, these are unbelievable people. I'm really overwhelmed. It's a great place."

McLoughlin, who taught in Yorktown, said two of his former students now work as full-time farmers at Hilltop. He said there is a real buzz in Yorktown.

"If you've been in town and remember when we used to have cows, you're pretty excited," McLoughlin said. "Hopefully we can add more cows. We're taking some baby steps and we'll see what the reaction is."
