Ossining Girl Scouts Haunt Town With Scarecrow-a-palooza

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Two dozen scarecrows popped up around Ossining this month, part of the Ossining Girl Scouts' second annual Scarecrow-a-Palooza.

Each scarecrow was crafted by an Ossining Girl Scout troop to brighten up October and celebrate the season. There are more than 500 girls in the Ossining Girl Scout community — one of the largest Girl Scout communities in the seven-county Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson Council.

Collaborating with the Ossining Parks and Recreation Department, whose staff dug the holes for the scarecrows, the Ossining Girl Scout troops erected their creations during the weekend of Oct. 17-18. The scarecrows will stay up until the weekend of Nov. 7-8.

"Last year's event was enormously successful. This year, we've made it even better by adding more sites, creating driving routes so you know where to see the scarecrows, and a scavenger hunt featuring fun clues to match with each scarecrow," said Rosie Foster, Ossining Girl Scout community director.

Foster co-leads the Ossining Girl Scout community with fellow director Rose Marie Jost.

To learn where the scarecrows are and to access the scavenger hunt, visit http://www.ossininggirlscouts.org/. The directions and clues are available as Web pages and are downloadable as printable PDFs.
