The event, according to the Red Cross is held in honor of Stephanie Crispinelli, a 19-year-old Somers woman who was killed in the 2010 Haiti earthquake while on a volunteer mission for the group Food for the Poor. The organization also notes that Feb. 14 is Crispinelli's birthday.

The kit's event will be hosted by Primrose Elementary School, which Crispinelli graduated from, and supported by the Stephanie Crispinelli Humanitarian Fund, which was founded in her honor.

"This is the best way to celebrate Valentine's day and honor Stephanie's memory. It is an inspiring day filled with love," Mary Young, who is CEO of the American Red Cross Metro New York North, said in a statement.

First graders at Primrose will assemble the kits, the Red Cross notes, which will go to children affected by disasters such as fires. To date, the Red Cross states that more than 600 kits have been created.
