To celebrate its 175th anniversary, Hilltop Hanover is hosting four presentations and a ceremony commemorating the Old Croton Dam and Aqueduct and the contributions of the people who helped build the Croton Water System.
Bob Giordano, who helped plan the event, said he has been studying the water system for 25 years. He had the good fortune of being neighbors with Bob Waterhouse, who worked for the Department of Environmental Protection for 40 years and will be one of the presenters.
The presentations will discuss how before the Revolutionary War New Yorkers realized they needed a source of clean water, especially after a cholera epidemic killed 3,515 people, exploring various options until they settled on the Croton Dam after various false starts.
According to NYC Water, over 25,000 people gathered to witness the opening of the gates that released the water from the aqueduct into a reservoir in the city.
