Alina DiMella of Brewster has been a Girl Scout since the age of 8 and is currently a Senior Girl Scout with Troop 2850 in North Salem, according to a statement.

Over the past year, she’s working on planning and implementing an event she called “Brave and Beautiful” to focus on “the self-confidence of cancer survivors,” according to the statement.

“When people leave my event, I want everyone to know that they are brave and beautiful,” DiMella said.

The project culminated with a brunch and fashion show on April 3 at the Pleasantville Country Club, according to a statement. Food for the event was provided by Unique Affair Catering and Events. Clothing was provided by Pleasantville businesses Rhodadendron and At Last.

All models at the show, which drew a crowd of about 90, were local cancer survivors who volunteered their time to participate.

“My favorite part was talking with the models afterwards,” DiMella said. “They all thanked me and told me how glad they were to be part of it.”

DiMella’s work was held in honor of Support Connection, Inc., which holds an annual Support-A-Walk event for breast and ovarian cancer awareness. According to a statement, the money collected during DiMella's April 3 event went toward yoga classes for women suffering from those conditions.

Katherine Quinn, executive director of Support Connection, praised DiMella’s efforts.

“It was a beautiful day, and it’s another example of the good work done by young people who support us,” Quinn said. “The yoga classes being donated by Alina will bring peace and enhanced well-being to the women who participate.”
