To the editor:

Thanksgiving to New Year's is the busiest time of the year for food pantries. Cold weather and the holidays combine to create an increased need for our services. Luckily, it's also the time of year when neighbors and local businesses have a heightened sense of making donations to help those among us who are less fortunate.

Both Yorktown Community Help and the First Presbyterian Church food pantries would like to thank all of their patrons and volunteers who very generously contribute money, food, and their time throughout the year. As 100 percent volunteer organizations, we literally could not do what we do without each and every one of you. We would like to especially thank the Yorkville Sports Association and the new Acme supermarket in the Triangle Shopping Center for a very successful charitable event that recently benefited both of our pantries.

The Yorkville Sports Association organized and hosted their annual Turkey Bowl Flag Football Tournament on Thanksgiving weekend, with all proceeds going to our local food pantries. They solicited monetary donations from many local businesses to sponsor the event.

As one of the sponsors, Acme offered to spearhead a food drive in their store from Thanksgiving to New Year's Day. It resulted in truckloads of non-perishable food for both pantries, just when we need it most.

We say thank you to Al, Tom, and Rosie at Yorkville Sports Association, and Mike at Acme for helping us help those in need. You are both valuable and welcome additions to the Yorktown community.

Sincerely, David Humphrey, Yorktown Community Help Food Pantry and Bud Coccodrilli, First Presbyterian Church of Yorktown Food Pantry
