Solemn Ceremony Honors WWII Vets in Shrub Oak

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. — It's been 67 years since World War II ended, but remembering those she served with in the Navy still touches an emotional spot with Betty Gilbert. Gilbert, a member of the Navy WAVES, attended a ceremony Monday near John C. Hart Library in Shrub Oak at a monument known as the Honor Roll that lists the names of veterans who served in World War II.

Construction of the monument was spearheaded in 1945 by Gilbert's mother-in-law, Mary Gilbert.

"I get so upset. It's hard for me to get through it without crying," she said. "It's wonderful for so many people to come out for this."

The annual remembrance is led by the Mohegan Fire Department and concluded with a wreath being laid at the foot of the monument.

"We gather to especially remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of this great country," said Mohegan Volunteer Fire Association President Robert Piazza. "May we also gather so we never forget the sacrifices that were made."

A bell also tolled for the more than 3,000 soldiers that have died in the conflict in Afghanistan.
