Yonkers resident James McNair has pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder following two shooting incidents in the city involving the same man earlier this year.
On Jan. 14, in front of a deli on Warburton Avenue, the 23-year-old aimed a loaded gun at his intended victim and took three shots at a close range, though no one was struck by the bullets.
Less than a week later, on Jan. 20, McNair again opened fire on the same man in a Woodworth Avenue apartment building, this time hitting him. McNair’s victim suffered serious injuries to his leg and back in the second shooting. He was hospitalized, but refused to cooperate with police or prosecutors, Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr., said. Both shootings were caught on surveillance camera.
The investigation ultimately led police to McNair, who was arrested on Jan. 23.
“This defendant is accused of trying to shoot and kill a resident of Yonkers, not once but twice," said Police Commissioner Charles Gardner stated at the time of McNair’s arrest. "His violent and criminal behavior posed a deadly threat to both the victim and innocent bystanders. Due to the tenacious work of our police officers and detectives, he will now confront the full force of the law for his heinous acts; let this be a warning to others who dare to engage in violent conduct in our city.”
Following his guilty plea, McNair is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 10, when he is expected to be sentenced to 10 years in state prison as part of his plea agreement.
