A 22-year-old who was found asleep at the wheel by police is facing multiple charges after attempting to resist arrest while in possession of an illegal, loaded handgun and drugs in Putnam County.
New York State Police troopers on patrol in Southeast found Ridgefield, Conn., resident Peter Shirvell unconscious on Route 6 at the intersection of Starr Ridge near the entrance of the Shell gas station.
After waking him, Shirvell was found to be intoxicated, and when troopers attempted to take him into custody, police said he physically resisted. Further investigation determined that Shirvell was in possession of an illegal, loaded firearm and a small amount of cocaine.
Shirvell was charged with felony counts of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm. He was also charged with driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration and criminal possession of a controlled substance, all misdemeanors. Shirvell was also cited for disorderly conduct a violation.
Following arraignment in the Town of Southeast Court, Shirvell was remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $2,000 cash bail or $4,000 bond. He faces up to 15 years in prison on the weapons charges. Shirvell is due back in court on Dec. 5 to answer the charges.
