Yorktown Man, 28, Charged With Assault Surrenders To Police

A Yorktown man surrendered himself into police custody over the weekend for allegedly assaulting and hospitalizing his victim during a dispute that turned physical.

On Monday, Yorktown investigators announced the arrest of 26-year-old Lawrence Welch, who turned himself in at police headquarters at approximately 5 p.m. on Friday, May 11 following an incident the following day that left his victim in the hospital.

Officers from the Yorktown Police Department were dispatched to Phelps Memorial Hospital on Thursday night, where there was a report of an incident that took place shortly after 1 a.m. that morning. An investigation into the incident determined that Welch allegedly struck his victim, causing pain and injury that left his victim hospitalized.

After surrendering to police, Welch was charged with a misdemeanor count of third-degree assault, and a Temporary Order of Protection was issued on behalf of his alleged victim. Following arraignment, Welch was released on his own recognizance and is due back in Yorktown Justice Court on May 22 to answer the charge.
