There will be an increased police presence at the Scarsdale High School this week after officials were notified of “a disturbing online posting” in a group chat involving several former students.

Scarsdale Police Capt. Thomas Altizio issued an alert late on Monday afternoon regarding the posting on a “GroupMe” group chat, where one member posted a message that stated “don’t go to school today boys,” with an emoji of a handgun, prompting police intervention.

Police said that the former student had posted the message because he was concerned about an earlier Instagram post by another former Scarsdale student. Investigators located the former student who posted the Instagram message, and interviewed him with his family. It was determined that the former student, who is developmentally challenged and currently goes to school in Rockland County, was not happy at his current school, which led to the message, details of which were not disclosed by investigators.

According to police, the former student that posted the Instagram image does not own or have access to firearms and it was not his intent to threaten or alarm anyone in the Scarsdale High School community. The Rockland County school where the student currently attends has also been notified of the disturbing post.

Altizio said that “out of an abundance of caution, the Scarsdale Police Department has coordinated with the administration of the Scarsdale High School, and will be maintaining an increased presence at the high school, and the school will be implementing increased security measures and limiting access to the facility.”
