Board Vice President Karen Corrado and trustees Peter Bisaccia and Thomas Donatelli are the only three announced candidates for the three vacant seats on the Yorktown Central School District Board of Education. While their names will be the only ones on the ballot when residents vote on May 21, the spots are not necessarily guaranteed, said District Clerk Rebecca Lloyd.

“They can always write-in,” she said. “That’s the exciting thing every year is that there is always that option for a write-in.”

Voting is set to open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 21 at Mohansic Elementary School. Along with voting for the three vacant seats, residents will also vote on the district’s proposed budget for the 2013-14 school year. The board approved the proposed budget in April with a tax rate increase of 2.17 percent and a levy increase of 2.15 percent.

The budget was approved at $93,992,000 for the 2013-14 school year during the board’s regular meeting on April 8. The budget-to-budget increase from last year is 1.97 percent, said Thomas Cole, assistant superintendent for business. The 2012-13 budget included a 2.42 tax rate increase, Cole said. The budget includes $1.4 million in reserve funds and a reduction of $350,000 from last year’s budget to keep the tax rate lower, Board of Education President Jackie Carbone said.

To be eligible to vote on May 21, residents must have been previously registered for other school elections, have voted in a previous school election in the last four years or be registered to vote in political elections in the last four years. Voter status may be checked by calling the District Clerk’s Office at 243-8199. The final date for registration is May 16.
