MONTROSE, N. Y. -- As schools nationwide recognize Red Ribbon Week as a reminder to avoid drugs and alcohol, students at Hendrick Hudson High School in Montrose plan to have someone special in mind.

When the high school hosts the Red Ribbon Bowl football game Thursday, donations will be collected for the family of Robby Schartner, 21. Schartner, a Rye native and a lacrosse player at Manhattanville College, was killed in a car crash earlier this month in White Plains that involved an alleged drunk driver.

"We are hoping we can honor him with a donation to his family," said Tom Baker, athletic director at Hendrick Hudson High School

Thursday's game is a Class A football game against John Jay Cross River High School. It starts at 6 p.m. at Hendrick Hudson, 2166 Albany Post Road, Montrose.

The Red Ribbon Bowl football game is played annually as part of Red Ribbon Week activities. The national campaign started in 1988 to warn people about the danger of drugs and alcohol.

"Our football players and the John Jay Cross River football players are proud to support his cause and want to play in the Red Ribbon Bowl to support safe decisions," Baker said.

Football players said it an important reminder about how decisions affect others.

"Making safe choices in life is vital because a poor choice can simply risk the lives of others," said Tom Calandro, a senior captain of the Hendrick Hudson team.
