Battle Of The Books Gets Under Way At Beacon's Howland Library BEACON, N.Y. – Howland Public Library in Beacon is launching its annual Battle of the Books for the summer. The program pits various Mid-Hudson Valley libraries against each other in a trivia contest about the books they've read over the summer. Entering its eleventh year, Beacon has won the competition three times, including last year. Middle school students meet once a week to discuss what they've read and answer questions about each book. Teacher Of The Year Named In Shelton SHELTON, Conn. – Melissa Fenstermaker was named the Shelton School District's Teacher of the Year this week, according to the Connecticut Post. Fenstermaker, a fifth-grade teacher at Perry Hill School, was named recently by the school board, the Post said. After beginning a career as an insurance agent, Fenstermaker started out teaching in 2001, following in her father's footsteps, reported the Connecticut Post. State Police Investigate Shooting Of New Milford Officer NEW MILFORD, Conn. – Connecticut state police are investigating an incident in which an officer was shot in New Milford on Sunday afternoon, authorities said. The incident occurred about 2:30 p.m., as New Milford officers responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex on Candlewood Lake Road South, police said.
